The combined ages of a man and his son is 60 years. Twelve years ago, the father was five times as old as his son. Find their present ages.

Let the present age of son be x years,
Then, twelve years ago : x12 = son's age
father's age = 5(x12)
The combined age 5(x12)+(x12)=60
5x60+x12=60
x=22 years
The present age of son = 22 years
father's age 12 yrs. age = 5(x12)=50 years
Father's present age =50+12
=62 years
