Solution

The correct option is C deteriorating relations with family and friends

Adolescents are individuals within the average age group of 12-18 years who are transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Apart from major physical changes due to attainment of sexual maturity, adolescents also undergo cognitive, social, and emotional changes as they gradually mature into adults.

Owing to all the changes occurring in the body and the mind, adolescents are highly impressionable and vulnerable to being affected by everything that happens around them. Resorting to bad habits such as drug and alcohol abuse, smoking, etc becomes their way of enforcing a feeling of independence and grabbing attention by defying elders and being rebellious.

Some of the reasons which trigger adolescents to resort to drug and alcohol abuse are -
- Unnecessary pressure from parents to excel in studies or sports
- Imposition of decisions and dismissal of their wishes and ambitions which results in depression, anxiety.
- Peer pressure and the desire to be perceived as ‘cool’ and adventurous
- Curiosity of experimenting
- Desire of experiencing thrill and adventure

Drug and alcohol usage brings in a sense of immediate euphoria, a temporary sense of well-being in the struggling minds of adolescents and helps them escape reality. The psychological attachment to these perceived benefits triggers them to use these substances regularly, which ultimately leads to addiction.
Adolescents fail to realise that addiction to drugs can have serious adverse effects on their body and mind which can reduce their life expectancy and deteriorate the quality of life for themselves and their family.

Thus to prevent and control drug and alcohol abuse, parents, teachers or guardians have to keep an alert eye for any warning signs that might indicate addiction. This is required to ensure prompt action to help the adolescent fight addiction and return to a normal life.

The most common warning signs of these bad habits include
- drop in academic performance
- irregularity in school or college
- deteriorating relation with family and friends
- depression
- increased aggressiveness
- lack of personal hygiene
Cough, wheezing, fever, severe headache and fainting spells are symptoms that can be associated with any disease, they are not specific indications towards drug abuse.
