Question

The densities of nitrogen and oxygen at NTP are 1.25 kg/m3 and 1.43 kg/m3 respectively .If the speed of sound in oxygen at NTP is 320 m/s. calculate the speed in nitrogen, under the same conditions of temperature and pressure. (y for both the gases is 1.4)

Open in App
Solution

Density of Nitrogen at NTP=1.25kg/m3
Density of Oxygen at NTP=1.43kg/m3
Speed of sound in oxygen is 320m/s
Speed of sound in gases =yRTM
y=1.4 given for both gases
320=1.4×8.314kj/kmolek×293MO2
(320)2=1.4×8.314KJ/kmolek×293MO2
MO2=1.4×8.314kJ/kmolek×293320×320
MO2=33.30kg/kmole
Density =Massvolume
1.43=33.30V
V=23.25
For Nitrogen (N2)
1.25=MN223.28
MN2=29.1kg/kmole
Speed of sound in N2=  1.4×8.314×29329.11000
Speed of sound in N2=342.33m/s
