Question

The density of water at 0C is 0.998g cm3 and at 4C is 1.000g cm3. Calculate the average coefficient of volume expansion of water in the temperature range 0 to 4C.

Open in App
Solution

The density at 0C is ρ0oC=0.998 g/m3
The density at 4c is ρ4oC=1 g/m3

The change in density is given by:
ρ0oC=ρ4oC1+γΔT

0.998=11+γ×4

1+4γ=10.998

4γ=10.9981γ=0.00055×104

As density decreases γ=5×104
