The regions around the p-n junction having no mobile charge carrier is called depletion region. This is because when a p-n junction is formed, diffusion takes place of electrons from n to p side and of holes from p to n side of the diode. As s result, in the p-region, there are negative ions fixed in their positions. In the n-region, there are positive ions fixed in the positions.
Hence, the negative ions near the junction in p-side and positive ions near the junction of n-side form negative charge and positive charge layer respectively. This space charge regions on both sides of p-n junction is called depletion region.
