Question

The depression in freezing point is 0.24K obtained by dissolving 1 gram kel in 200 gram water, calculate Van't Hoff factor. The molal depression constant is 1.86 K kg mole1.

Solution

ΔTf=0.24k mass of KCl=1g Kf=1.86K kg/mol
mass of water (solvent) =200g
Molar mass of solute =1000×Kf×mass of soluteΔT1×mass of solvent
=1000×1.86×10.24×200=38.75g/mol
This is the experimental molar mass of solute (KCl).
Theoretical molar mass =3a+35.5=74.5g/mol
van't hott factor (i) =Theoretical molar massExpermenmtal molar mass=74.538.75
i=1.92
