Question

The diagram given below represents a stage during cell division:

Study the same and answer the questions that follows:

(i) Identify whether it is a plant or an animal cell? Give a reason in support of your answer.

(ii) Name the stage depicted in the diagram. What is the uniques feature observed in this stage?

(iii) Name the type of cell division that occurs during:

  1. Replacement of old leaves by new ones. 2. Formation of gametes.

(iv) What is the stage that comes before the stage shown in the diagram?

(v) Draw a neat, labelled diagram of the stage mentioned in (v) above keeping the chromosome number constant.

Solution

(i) It is a plant cell because it has a cell wall.

(ii) The stage depicted in the diagram is Metaphase. The unique feature observed in this stage is that all the chromosomes get aligned at the equatorial plate.

(iii)

  1. The type of cell division that occurs during replacement of old leaves is Mitosis.
  2. Mitosis is that step in the cell cycle where the newly formed DNA is separated and two new cells are formed with the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus.
  3. The type of cell division that occurs during formation of gametes is Meiosis.

(iv)

  1. The stage that comes before Metaphase is Prophase.
  2. The non-dividing preparation phase or resting phase during which a cell develops to its maximal size and DNA (chromosome material) is synthesized is known as interphase.
