Question

The dimensions of a room are 14 m × 10m × 6.5 m. There are two doors & four windows in the room. Each door measures 2.5 m × 1.2 m and each window measures 1.5 m × 1m. Find the cost of painting the four walls at Rs. 9.50 per m2.

Solution

Length of the room = 14 m
Breadth of the room = 10 m
Height of the room = 6.5 m
∴ Area of four walls = 2(breadth × height + length × height)
= 2(10 × 6.5 + 14 × 6.5) m2
= 312 m2

Length of the door = 2.5 m
Breadth of the door = 1.2 m
Area of the door = length × breadth
= 2.5 × 1.2 m2
= 3 m2
∴ Area of two doors = 2 × 3 m2 = 6 m2

Length of the window = 1.5 m
Breadth of the window = 1 m
Area of a window = Length × Breadth
= 1.5 × 1 m2
= 1.5 m2
∴ Area of four windows = 4 × 1.5 m2 = 6 m2

Now, painted area of the wall = area of four walls − area of two doors − area of four windows
= (312 – 6 – 6) m2
= 300 m2
Cost of painting for 1 m2 = Rs 9.50
∴ Cost of painting for 440 m2 = Rs 9.50 × 300 = Rs 2850
