Question

The drain cleaner contains small bits of aluminium which reacts with caustic soda to produce hydrogen gas. What volume of H2 gas at 200C and 1 bar pressure will be released when 0.27 g aluminium reset with caustic soda.(at.mass of Al=27u)2Al+2NaOH+2H2O2NaAlO2+3H2

Solution

2Al+2NsOH+2H2O2NaAlO2+3H2
number of Aluminium =0.2727=0.01 mole
2 mole aluminium react with caustic soda and give 3 mol H2
0.001 mole aluminium react with caustic soda and give 32×0.01
n=0.082=0.015
Temperature of H2 T=20o+273=293 k
present P=1 bar,R=8.31×1022 bar k1mole1
V=nRTP litre
=0.015×8.314×102×2931 hour litre
=0.3659 litre =365.9 ml
