Question

The electron affinity values (in kJ mol1) of three halogens x, y and z are respectively -349, -333 and -325. Then x, y and z are respectively
  1. F2,Cl2 and Br2
  2. Cl2,F2 and Br2
  3. Cl2,Br2 and F2
  4. Br2,Cl2 and F2

Solution

The correct option is B Cl2,F2 and Br2
Generally electron affinity decreases down the group but F2 has a lower electron affinity compared to Cl2 because the size of F2 is very small and hence interelectronic repulsion is high.
