The energy flows in a chain in the environment i.e. from sun to producers than to herbivores than to carnivores and further to decomposers.

Dear Student,

Energy is lost as heat in the end and it is not recycled. It is only the inorganic nutrients that gets recycled. All organisms in the food chain dies and decomposers feed on detritus. It is at this stage, the energy that is extracted is lost in the environment in the form of heat.
