The energy transferred from one trophic level to another
Decreases
The energy in an ecosystem is captured from the sun by producers through the process of photosynthesis. The plant performs all the cellular activities using this energy. So some amount of energy absorbed from the sun by the plants is lost. Now when a herbivore consumes the plant the amount of energy it obtains reduces. The herbivore obtains energy from the plant and uses this to perform all the cellular activities. And then the energy available for the carnivore which will consume the herbivore is again reduced. The amount of energy transferred from a lower trophic level (plant) to a higher trophic level always decreases as energy is lost at each step. Only 10 percent of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next.
