Question

The equivalent conductances of sodium choride, hydrochloric acid and sodium acetate at infinite dilution are 126.45,426.16 and 91.0 ohm1cm2eq1, respectively, at 25C. Calculate the equivalent conductance of acetic acid at infinite dilution.

Solution

According to Kohlrausch's law,
CH3COONa=λCH3COO+λNa+=91.0....(i)
HCl=λH++λCl=426.16.....(ii)
NaCl=λNa++λCl=126.45....(iii)
Adding eqs. (i) and (ii) and subtracting eq. (iii)
λCH3COO+λNa++λH++λClλNa+λCl
=91.0+426.16126.45
λCH3COO+λH+=CH3COOH=390.7 ohm1cm2eq1.
