The figure given alongside is an experimental setup to show a vital process. Study it carefully and answer the questions that follow:

Can we compare the setup to show the phenomena by taking the example of a root hair. If so, then name the parts that correspond to:

i). Concentrated sugar solution.

ii). Parchment paper

iii). Water in the beaker

Semipermeable membrane:

  1. A semipermeable membrane is one of the three biological membranes.
  2. It has the ability to allow the solvent to move through a semi-permeable membrane but restricts the movement of the solute molecules.

Comparing the setup to show the phenomena by taking the example of a root hair in respect of the following:

1. Concentrated sugar solution - Cytoplasm of the root hair cell.

The movement of sugar solution inside the thistle funnel is the same as that of the movement of water inside the cytoplasm of the root hair cell. This similarity exists because of their similar relative tonicity.

2. Parchment paper: Cell membrane, that is, the semi-permeable membrane.

Parchment paper and cell membrane both allow the solvent to move from high concentration to low concentration are.

3. Water in the beaker: water in the soil.

Just as water moves from soil to plant root hairs, water moves from the beaker to the thistle funnel.
