The figure shows a bar magnet and two large pins hung from its north pole. Explain why these two pins repel each other?

Solution

  1. When a magnetic material is kept closer to a permanent magnet, it gets magnetised under the presence of that magnet.
  2. Under the influence of that magnet it behaves as a temporary magnet.
  3. Since the pin behaves as a magnet it should have two poles.
  4. The end of the pin facing the north pole of the magnet will be the south pole and the farther end will be the north pole.
  5. This is similar in case of both the magnets.
  6. Since at the bottom portion both pins have a north pole, they repel each other.
