The first homologue of the series with general formula CnH2n is ethene.
Water is used as a coolant in automobiles because it can absorb large amount of heat from the engine due to high specific heat. However, in cold countries, the water may freeze to ice due to very low temperature. Similarly in summer season water may tend to boil as it absorbs heat. Ethyleneglycol is added to water which can prevent freezing as well as boiling. This is because the addition of ethylene glycol to water leads to depression in freezing point as well as elevation in boiling point. As a result, water can maintain liquid range over a wide range of temperature.
