The fluid-mosaic model mainly describes the structure of plasma membrane of animal cells. This model was proposed by Singer and Nicolson in 1972. This model describes the plasma membrane as a phospholipid bilayer. The bilayer is fluid in nature and the proteins embedded or attached to them give a mosaic-like appearance and hence, the name. Each phospholipid molecule has a hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tail. The membrane also has various integral or membrane spanning proteins and peripheral proteins.
