Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). It can be transmitted from an infected person to a healthy person by sharing syringes used for injecting drugs. It can also be transmitted from an infected mother to an infant through her milk. The virus can also be transmitted through sexual contact with a person infected with HIV. It does not spread by mere physical contact like hugs and handshakes. It only occurs when there is exchange of internal body fluids like, blood.
