Question

The gases produced when 18 g carbon reacts with 5 L of oxygen at 18 and 5 atm pressure are treated with 0.5 L of 2 M NaOH. The concentration of sodium carbonate produced by the reaction of CO2 with NaOH is_________. (as nearest integer)
(CO does not react under these conditions).

Solution

C+12O2CO...(i)
C+O2CO2..(ii)
let a mole of C reacts according to Eq. (i) and b mole of c reacts according to Eq. (ii).
Then, a+b=1812=1.5...(iii)
Also, Mole of O2 used = a2+b=5×50.0821×291(n=PVRT)
or, a2+b=1.046...(iv)
By Eqs. (iii) and (iv) a=0.908,b=0.592
CO2formed=0.592mol
Now , 2NaOH+CO2Na2CO3...(v)
2NaOH+CO2Na2CO3+H2O
1.0 0.592 0 0
0 0.092 0.5 _
Thus, Mole of Na2CO3 formed =0.5
Also,Mole of CO2 left =0.092
Now, Na2CO3+CO2+H2O2NaHCO3
0.5 0.092 0
0.408 0 0.184
Mole of Na2CO3 left =0.408
Mole of NaHCO3 formed =0.148
MNa2CO3=0.4080.5=0.816M
so nearest integer is 1.
MNaHCO3=0.1840.5=0.368M
