C+O2⟶CO2;ΔH=−393.5kJ/mol.....(1)
CO+12O2⟶CO2;ΔH=−283kJ/mol
CO2⟶CO+12O2;ΔH=283kJ/mol.....(2)
Adding eqn(1)&(2), we have
C+O2+CO2⟶CO2+CO+12O2;ΔH=[(−393.5)+283]kJ/mol
C+12O2⟶CO;ΔH=−110.5kJ/mol
Hence, the heat of combustion of carbon there in CO is −110.5kJ/mol.
