Question

The heat of carbon combustion with the CO2 formation, is 393.5 KJ/mol, and the heat of CO combustion with the formation of CO2, is 283 KJ/mol. calculate the heat of combustion of carbon there in CO.

Solution

Given:-
C+O2CO2;ΔH=393.5kJ/mol.....(1)
CO+12O2CO2;ΔH=283kJ/mol
CO2CO+12O2;ΔH=283kJ/mol.....(2)
Adding eqn(1)&(2), we have
C+O2+CO2CO2+CO+12O2;ΔH=[(393.5)+283]kJ/mol
C+12O2CO;ΔH=110.5kJ/mol
Hence, the heat of combustion of carbon there in CO is 110.5kJ/mol.
