Indian wild ass (Equus hemionus) is only found in one place that is in the little Rann of Kutch. In the local Gujarati language, it is called as Ghudkhur, Khur or Indian longer.

How does it look?

  • The coat of Indian wild ass is usually sandy, but can vary from reddish grey, fawn, to pale chestnut.
  • The animal possesses an erect, dark mane which runs from the back of the head and along the neck.
  • The animal also comprises of a dark brown stripe running along the back, to the root of the tail.

Where does it found?

  • The range of Indian will ass extends from western India to southern Pakistan
  • The animal is mostly seen in the area of Rann of kutch
  • It is mainly found in the districts of Surendranagar, Banaskantha, Mehsana, and other Kutch districts.
  • The preferred environment for the animals are Saline deserts (rann), arid grasslands and shrublands.

Protection and Conservation

  • The Wild Ass Wildlife Sanctuary situated in the little rann of kutch in the Gujarat protects the Indian wild-ass.
  • The sanctuary was established in 1972 under the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972.
