Solution:
The functioning of the Maurya Empire can be explained as follows:
When the Second World War ended, the call for Indian independence grew stronger. The British initiated negotiations with the Congress and the Muslim League, but it failed. After the league managed to capture most of the seats reserved for Muslims in the 1946 elections, they started insisting on the demand to create Pakistan.
As a result of this, the British cabinet sent a mission to Delhi in March 1946, which suggested India to remain united and to constitute itself as a loose confederation, with some autonomy for Muslim-majority areas. However, the two parties could not agree on it, leaving no option other than partition.
On 16th August 1946, the League observed “Direct Action Day”. On this day, riots broke out in Calcutta and thousands of people lost their lives. By March 1947, violence spread further, and India was finally partitioned in August 1947. The partition of India into India and Pakistan was accompanied by widespread violence. Many people either became homeless or refugees in foreign lands. Thus, the joy of independence came with the pain and violence of partition.
