  • Shells have stationary energy levels, the energy of each shell is constant.
  • These shells are called energy levels. It is numbered as 1,2,3,4....or K,L,M,N......from the nucleus outwards.

  • The maximum number of electrons present in a shell is given by the formula 2n2, where ‘n’ represents the shell number.

1. First orbit or K-shell (n=1) =

Therefore, the K shell can accommodate 2 electrons whereas L can accommodate 8 electrons.
