Question

The left pan of a scale has 5 packets of sweets weighing
150 g each. If the right pan has 6 packets of cookies weighing 120 g each, will the scale be balanced? If not, how much weight should be added to which pan to balance it? (3 marks)

Solution

Solution:

Weight on the left pan = 150 × 5 = 750 g (0.5 mark)
Weight on the right pan = 120 × 6 = 720 g (0.5 mark)

We know that, in order to balance the scale, both pan should have equal weights. (0.5 mark)
Since they are not equal, the scale would not be balnaced. (0.5 mark)

Since 720 < 750, we need to add weight to the right pan. (0.5 mark)
Thus, weight to be added to the right pan to balance the scale = 750 - 720 = 30 g (0.5 mark)
