Open in App
Solution

Litmus solution

  1. Indicators are used to find the acidic or basic nature of any given solution.
  2. Litmus solution is a natural indicator extracted from lichens plant. The solution has a purple color.

Adsorption

  1. Adsorption is a surface phenomenon in which fine molecules of solute get accumulated on a material.
  2. The material on which particles accumulate is called adsorbent and that accumulates is called as adsorbate.

Explanation

  • Litmus solution has a purple color. When it is shaken with charcoal, molecules of dye get accumulated on the surface of the charcoal.
  • Charcoal has a highly porous surface and it is a good adsorbent.
  • Hence pores on charcoal hold molecules of the dye turning the litmus solution colorless.
