Question

What is the difference when a concentrated solution of KCl is shaken with charcoal and when a dilute
solution of KCl is shaken with charcoal?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

When concentrated KCl is shaken with charcoal, it shows positive adsorption.
When dilute KCl is shaken with charcoal, it shows negative adsorption.

Adsorption:
It is the process in which, molecular species accommodate on the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid.
The molecular species that accommodate at the surface is called adsorbate.
The material on the surface of which the adsorbate takes place is called adsorbent.

POSITIVE ADSORPTION:
In positive adsorption, adsorbate is more on the surface of the adsorbent compared to that in the bulk.

NEGATIVE ADSORPTION:
In negative adsorption, adsorbate is less on the surface of the adsorbent compared to that in the bulk.
