Question

The mass of a hydrogen molecule is 3.32×1027 kg. If 1023 hydrogen molecules strike per second at 2 cm2 area of rigid wall of a close container normally and rebound back with the speed of 1000 m/s, then the pressure exerted on the wall (according to kinetic theory of gas) is :

Solution

The correct option is D 3320 N/m2
According to kinetic theory, collision between molecules and wall of container is perfectly elastic.
Change in momentum,
|(ΔP)|=PfPi=2mv
where v is rebound velocity of molecule
We know that
F=ΔPΔt
Force exerted by 1 molecule in 1 sec
F1=2mv N
Force exerted by 1023 molecule in 1 sec
=2mv×1023 N
Pressure exerted by 1023 molecule
=2×mv×1023Area
=2×m×v×10232×104
=2×3.32×1027×103×10232×104
=3320 N/m2
