Question

The mean of 24 numbers is 35. If 3 is added to each number, what will be the new mean?

Solution

The mean of 24 numbers is 35.
Let the 24 numbers be a,b,c,d.......w,x.
Then,
(a+b+c+d+.........+w+x)/24=35
Let this be equation 1.
So... Then,
We are adding 3 to every number.
Thus, the final mean is
[(a+3)+(b+3)+(c+3)+.........+(w+3)+(x+3)]/24=final mean
So, when we take all 3s aside, we have
{[a+b+c+.......+w+x]+[3+3+3+3+........(24times)]}/24=final mean
We can split this into two terms... The variables on one side wand constants on the other.
So, we get
[(a+b+c+.......+w+x)/24]+[(3+3+3+3+.......(24 times))/24]=final mean
So now the first variable group is equal to the given mean according to equation 1 and the second part is equal to
24*3/24=3
Thus, summing up both, we get
Final mean=35+3=38.
