Cellular respiration
The food particles we consume are made up of complex compounds such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins and many vitamins.
These complex compounds need to be oxidised and broken down into simpler substances in order to release energy.
The cell requires energy to carry out its metabolic activities. This process of break down of the complex compounds into simpler forms is known as respiration.
As this process is carried out within the cell hence it is regarded as ‘Cellular respiration’.
