Moment of inertia a of a uniform rod of mass M, length L about its perpendicular bisector is
I=112ML2...................(i)
When the temperature of the rod is increased by T, there is increase in length of the road Lis given by
L=LαT................ (ii)
New moment of inertia about the same axis is
I=112m(l+L)2=112M[L2+(L)2+2LL]
Since L is a small quantity , the term L)2 being very small can be neglected.
I=112M[L2+2LL]
=112ML2+112ML22αT ......Using (ii)
=I+2αIT ......Using (i)
Increase in moment of inertia,
=II=2αIT
