Solution

Say:
The given rods and units represent the number of stickers that Jane has .She has 17 fewer stickers than those with Jax. Let's decompose and add to find the total number of stickers they have.

Steps:
  • There are 4 rods and 2 units = 4 Tens and 2 Ones = 42 Therefore, Jane has 42 stickers.
  • The number of stickers Jane has is 17 fewer than Jax, i.e., Jax has 17 more stickers than those with Jane.
  • So, let us add 42 and 17.
  • 42 = 40 + 2 whereas 17 = 10 + 7.
  • Adding Ones will give us: 2 + 7 = 9.
  • Adding Tens will give us: 40+ 10 = 50.
  • 50 + 9 = 59.
  • So, 42 + 17 = 59.Therefore, Jax has 59 stickers.
  • Now, to find the total number, we will add 42 and 59. Breakdown 42 into 40 + 2 and 59 into 50 + 9.
  • First add the Ones, i.e., 2 + 9 = 11
  • Next, add the Tens, i.e., 40 + 50 = 90
  • Further, regroup and add the Tens and Ones:
  • 90 + 11 = 90 + 10 + 1 = 100 + 1 = 101
  • Thus, they have 101 stickers in total.
  • Hence, option D is the answer.
