Let the number of students in the classes be $2 x, 3 x$ and $4 x$ respectively.
Then, total students $= 2 x + 3 x + 4 x = 9 x$
According to the question,
$\frac{2 x + 12}{3 x + 12} = \frac{8}{11}$
$\Rightarrow 11 x + 66 = 12 x + 48$
$\Rightarrow x = 18$
$∴$ Total number of students in the three classes in the beginning $= 9 \times 18 = 162$
