Question

The numbers 1 to 10 are each printed on a counter and the 10 counters are placed in a bag. If one counter is picked at random, what is the probability that the number on it is an even number?

Solution

Step 1 Finding the favorable and total outcomes:

There are 10 counters placed in a bag, so the total outcome is 10.

Even numbers are the numbers which are divisible by 2.

In the range 1 to 10, the numbers which are divisible by 2 are:

2,4,6,8,10

So the number of favourable outcomes are 5.

Step 2 Finding the probability that the drawn counter has an even number on it:

The formula for the probability is expressed as,

Probability=NumberoffavorableoutcomesTotalnumberofoutcomes

Substitute favorable number of outcomes as 5 and the total number of outcomes as 10.

Pevennumber=510Pevennumber=12

Hence, the probability of even numbered counter from a bag of 10 counters numbered 1 to 10 is 12.
