The
organisms without a cell wall and can live without oxygen are mycoplasmas. Mycoplasma
is the simplest and the smallest of the free living prokaryotes. They were
discovered in pleural fluid of cattle suffering from pleuropneumonia. They are
often called PPLO (Pleuropneumonia like organisms). The size ranges from
0.1-0.15 μm. A cell wall is absent. Plasma membrane forms the outer boundary of
the cell. Due to the absence of cell wall, the organisms can change their shape
and are pleomorphic. They are not even sensitive to pencillin because of the
lack of cell wall. They produce pleuropneumonia in plants and domestic animals.
They are facultative anaerobes.
