Solution
Popoff’s rule
Popoff’s rule states that during the oxidation of an unsymmetrical ketone, the cleavage of the C−CO bond is done in such a way that the keto group always stays with the smaller alkyl group.
Oxidation of 2,5−dimethylhexan−3−one
When 2,5−dimethylhexan−3−one undergoes oxidation according to Popoff’s rule, the following products will be obtained.
Hence, the product formed on the oxidation of 2,5−dimethylhexan−3−one is 2−methylpropanoic acid.
