The permissible use of the technique amniocentesis in India is for________.
Amniocentesis is a prenatal test which is used to detect genetic disorders in the foetus. It is also used for foetal sex determination.
During amniocentesis, a little amount of amniotic fluid which surrounds the foetus in the womb is collected. This fluid consists of foetal cells and dissolved substances. The foetal cells are analysed and the chromosomal pattern of the foetal cells reveals if the foetus has got any genetic disorders.
Amniocentesis is banned in India because it is misused by the people to kill the female foetus after the sex of the foetus is determined. This led to increased female foeticide.
In India, permissible use of amniocentesis technique is only for detecting any genetic abnormality like Down's syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome and Patau’s syndrome etc. based on the chromosome pattern.
