In the carius method known mass of org.comp. is heated with fuming nitric acid in presence of silver nitrate in a carius tube. Carbon and hydrogen present in the compound are oxidised to $C O_{2}$ and water. The halogen present in the compound forms the precipitate of corresponding silver halide. It is filtered, washed dried and weighed.
