The process in which forests are first converted into pastures, then into arid land, and finally into deserts is known as _________.
Deforestation is a process which is caused by soil erosion. Soil erosion leads to removal of the top layer of the soil and exposes the lower, hard and rocky layers. This lower layer of the soil has less humus and is less fertile. Gradually, the fertile lands with forests slowly get converted into deserts over a period of time. This process is called desertification.
