Solution

The correct option is C addiction
Drugs are chemical substances which have physical and psychological effects when administered into an organism’s body. Some of the effects of using certain drugs include a sense of immediate euphoria, a temporary sense of well-being, instant relief from pain, etc. The psychological attachment of an individual to the feeling of euphoria and temporary well-being, associated with drugs, is known as drug addiction.

With repeated usage, the tolerance of the body increases and the body starts responding only to higher doses. This reinforces addiction and regular misuse of these potentially dangerous drugs. Addiction to drugs can have serious short- and long-term adverse effects on the body and mind of an addict which can reduce their life expectancy. It also deteriorates the quality of life for the addict and his or her family.

Drugs are used as stimulants, analgesics (pain killers), hallucinogens, sedatives, tranquilisers and performance enhancers. While their immediate effects might seem beneficial, prolonged abuse of drugs leads to various chronic diseases such as permanent damage to the nervous system, psychosis (loss of contact with reality), damage to major internal organs such as heart, liver and kidneys, etc.

Drug addiction also increases reckless behaviour, vandalism and aggressiveness of the users. Lack of money to afford the supply of drugs often causes drug users to resort to stealing. All of these effects directly or indirectly affect friends and family and become a cause of distress for them too.

As the time passes, the body develops dependence on the drugs because of which it fails to function properly in the absence of drugs as the regular physiological functions in the body are impaired.

The tendency of the body to manifest a characteristic and unpleasant withdrawal syndrome if there is discontinuation in the regular dose of drugs/alcohol is called dependence.
Abruptly discontinuing regular doses of a drug, for which the body has developed dependence, can result in the manifestation of some unpleasant withdrawal symptoms to combat with the absence of the drug. These symptoms include anxiety, shakiness, nausea, sweating, vomiting, etc. A person is relieved of these symptoms once the drug intake is resumed.
