Solution

Manufacturing of AmmoniaNH3

(i) Name of Process

  • AmmoniaNH3 is manufactured by Haber's process.

(ii) Ratio of reactants in manufacturing of Ammonia

  • NitrogenN2 and HydrogenH2 are the two reactants in the formation of Ammonia.
  • These are taken in ratio 1:3 by volume respectively.

(iii) Name of catalyst used

  • Finely divided IronFe is used as a catalyst.
  • Small amount of promoter MolybdenumMo is also used with the catalyst to enhance the efficiency of the catalyst.

(iv) Equation for manufacturing of Ammonia

  • N2g+3H2g450-500oC2NH3g+Heat

(Nitrogen) (Hydrogen) (Ammonia)

(v) Ammonia as a reducing agent

  • ChlorineCl2 gas is reduced to Ammonium chlorideNH4Cl in presence of excess AmmoniaNH3.
  • First Chlorine reacts with Ammonia to give Hydrogen chlorideHCl which further reacts with excess Ammonia and produces Ammonium chloride.
  • The overall reaction is as follows:
  • 8NH3g+3Cl2gN2g+6NH4Cls
