Question

The radius of Na6 ion is 95 pm and that of Cl ions is 181'pm. Predict whether the Co-ordination number of Na4 ion is 6 or 4.

Open in App
Solution

Given, radius of Na+(r+)=95 pm

Radius of Cl(r)=181 pm

We know that,

Radius ratio=Radius of cation (r+)Radius of anion (r)

=95181=0.523

This value lies between 0.4140.732 range, so the coordination number of Na will be 6 as predicted by radius ratio rule.
