Question

The ratio of two numbers is 23. If 2 is subtracted from the first and 8 from the second, the ratio becomes the reciprocal of the original ratio. Find the numbers.

Let the two numbers be x and y

According to the question,

x over y equals 2 over 3

3x - 2y = 0 ...(1)

Also, fraction numerator x minus 2 over denominator y minus 8 end fraction equals 3 over 2

2x - 3y = -20 ...(2)

Multiplying equation no. (1) by 2 and (2) by 3 and substracting

6 x minus 4 y equals 0 6 x minus 9 y equals negative 60 s o l v i n g space t h e s e space e q u a t i o n s y equals 12

From (1), we get

3x - 2(12) = 0

x equals 24 over 3

x = 8

Thus, the numbers are 8 and 12.
