Solution

Recombinant DNA technology has played a role in
1. Diagnosis of genetic diseases.
2. DNA fingerprinting
3. Gene therapy
Eli Lilly was an American who pioneered the production of insulin. A company was set up by the same name. In 1983, Eli Lilly prepared the DNA sequence for A and В chains of human insulin. This was the inserted in plasmids of E. coli. These chains were produced as the bacteria multiplied. Both A and В chains were produced separately in different units. These chains were extracted by lysing the E-coli . They were then combined by introducing disulphide bonds between them to make human insulin also called humulin.
