Question

The regression equation of Y on X is y=29x and the regression equation of X on Y is x=y2+76
Find: a. Correlation coefficient between X and Y.
b. σ2y if σ2x=4.

Solution

The repression equation of y on x is y=29x
Comparing with y¯y=byx(x¯x)
Here, byx=29
Now, the regression equation of x on y is x=y2+76
Comparing with x¯x=bxy(y¯y)
Here, bxy=12
Part (a)
We have, correlation coefficient between x and y is
r=byx.bxy
r=29×12
r=±13
Therefore,
r=13 (Since byx and bxy are positive)
Part (b)
Since, σ2x=4σx=2
We have,
byx=r.σyσx
Therefore,
29=13.σy2
σy=43
Hence, this is the answer.
