Question

The resistance of 2Ω is connected across one gap of a meter-bridge (length of the wire is 100 cm) and an unknown resistance greater than 2Ω is connected across the other gap. When the resistance are interchanged, the balance point shifts by 20cm. Neglecting any corrections, the unknown resistance is: (in Ω)

Solution

Let the unknown resistance be R and the balance point be at l cm initially.
Using R1R2=l100l
Case 1: R1=2 and R2=R and l=l
2R=l100l ..........(1)

Case 2: R1=R and R2=2 and l=l+20
R2=l+2080l 2R=80ll+20 ........(2)

Equating (1) and (2) we get l100l=80ll+20 l=40 cm
From (1), 2R=4010040 R=3Ω
