Population density have self-regulatory factors, called the density dependent factors that work to contain population sizes as the density of population increases. Increase in population density increases the intraspecific competition, leading to a struggle for resources, thus limiting the rate of reproduction and in turn stabilizing the size of the population. Interspecific competition and intergeneric competition also can cause struggle for resources and affect population size, or even the survival of the species, however they do not have a self-regulatory mechanism.
