Solution

  1. A colloid is a type of mixture in which the size of solute particles is intermediate to that of true solution and suspension.
  2. A colloidal solution has two phases: dispersed phase (like solute) and dispersion medium (like solvent).
  3. The dispersed phase is the compound which is present in small proportion and consists of particles of colloidal dimensions (10-9mto10-7m).
  4. A dispersion medium is a component which is present in excess and acts as a medium in which colloidal particles are dispersed.
  5. Examples - milk, gold sol, etc.

Hence, the size of solute particles in a colloid varies between 10-9and 10-7m.
