Imbibition :

  1. In this, the absorption of water or solvent takes place by a solid substance.
  2. The molecules of water or any other liquid are absorbed by the surface of hydrophilic collides.
  3. Examples: Protein, starch, cellulose, etc.

Imbibant :

  1. It is a solid substance that absorbs water and swells up.
  2. Example: Dry seeds, Dry wood

Imbibate :

  1. It is the liquid or water which is imbibed by the imbibant.
  2. The imbibate is held through the process of absorption and capillarity.

The solid particle which imbibes is called imbibants while the liquid which imbibed is called imbibate.
