The splitting of water molecules is called photolysis of water. During the light reaction of photosynthesis, the absorption of light by the chlorophyll results in the loss of the electron from it. In order to fulfill the electron requirement, the water molecule splits and donates the electron to the chlorophyll. In this reaction of splitting, the oxygen is also formed which is released as the by-product.
