Solution

When the wind carried a whiff of the cheese to the horse of the cab, it woke up, snorted in terror and dashed off at the speed of three miles an hour. Before they reached the end of the street, it increased its speed to nearly four miles an hour, leaving behind cripples and stout old ladies.

The people in the railway carriage began remarking on how stifling it was inside. Then they began sniffing the air and caught the smell of the cheese at the third sniff. The old gentleman and the man sitting next to him were the first to leave, followed by the stout lady with her bag and eight parcels, commenting on how respectable women would not be harried about. The solemn looking man, probably an undertaker, said the smell reminded him of a dead baby. The remaining three passengers hurt themselves trying to exit at the same time. The black gentleman smiled and remarked about how some people create a fuss over trivial things. But even he became gradually depressed with time.

Tom's wife put the house in the charge of a charwoman who could stand the smell of the cheeses, took the children with her to a hotel, refusing to return to the house until the cheeses were eaten.
